Kiosk deployers continue to find opportunities to install outdoor interactive kiosks that display wayfinding, community information and paid advertising. Tourism sites and urban centers in particular are offering highly versatile interactive outdoor kiosks.

Back in the early spring, I reviewed maintenance considerations for outdoor kiosks. With inclement weather upon much of the country, now is an opportune time to expand on best practices for deploying outdoor kiosks. Outdoor kiosks that are not able withstand environmental factors will result in loss of revenue and equipment investment.

Consider environmental exposures

In discussing ways to prevent water damage back in April, I mentioned rain hoods, compression locks and strategically placed bends to avoid puddling water. I would add to this that outdoor kiosks should also include high-quality gaskets.

In addition to preventing the water intrusion, outdoor kiosks should be sealed properly to prevent smoke and dust intrusion. They should also have proper UV protection materials.

In consideration of elevated temperatures, outdoor kiosks should have built-in air conditioning units to avoid damaging the display, the computer and other internal components.

A common problem encountered with outdoor kiosks is their poor readability on account of sunlight. The external display should be bright enough to have at least 2,000 nits of light to maintain readability in outdoor environments.

To discourage and prevent tampering, outdoor kiosks should be equipped with tamper resistant features such as strategically placed stiffeners, extra weld points and compression locks. Proper security for outdoor kiosks will ensure that physical, data and network components are protected from tampering.

Proper site preparation

Site preparation is critical when installing an outdoor kiosk. The site must be prepped with a level, concrete foundation. Outdoor kiosks should be installed with highly stable cement mounting to prevent shaking, banging and vibrations that can cause issues with internal components.

There can also local government codes that need to be approved before installing the outdoor kiosk.

Manufacturer certifications matter

When considering a kiosk for outside use, it is critical to work with a kiosk manufacturer that abides by certain standards. There are many standards out there, including the International Standards Organization, known by the acronym ISO, and Underwriters Laboratories, known as UL. When choosing a vendor for an outdoor kiosk, it is imperative that they maintain ISO certification and UL listing.

ISO 9001:2008 exits so that manufacturers abide by strict quality controls. UL listed products ensure a particular level of safety necessary to install a kiosk in a public location.

Ensuring such measures in your manufacturer will assure reliability and peace of mind in deploying outdoor kiosks.
